INTRODUCTION (GIỚI THIỆU):
The Atlas of Clinical Ophthalmology is written as an introduction to clinical ophthalmology with the aim of providing a collection of carefully selected and high quality illustrations showing the type of material which is encountered in clinical practice. The interpretation of clinical signs and their implications are emphasised and ocular disease is correlated with reference to the relevant embryology, anatomy and physiology, together with pathology and imaging. More unusual or rare conditions are added for interest or to make a teaching point. With the ever increasing trend to subspecialisation there is a tendency to regard the eye in isolation from the rest of the body and even to look on ocular structures as organs in their own right. Instead we have tried to emphasise the concept that disorders of one ocular structure are part of the visual system as a whole and, where relevant, are a reflection of systemic disease.
There have been remarkable developments in diagnosis, imaging and treatment since the last edition. When the second edition was published cataract surgery was still completing the transformation from extracapsular to phaco surgery, corneal refractive surgery was controversial and macular hole surgery was in its infancy. These, together with many other examples, have now become routine daily procedures, each requiring its own technology and each bringing its own problems and complications. Wavefront analysis and OCT are now routine investigations, all are included in this new edition. Similarly there have been great therapeutic advances with the advent of treatment for HIV infection, prostaglandin analogues for glaucoma and photo dynamic therapy for age related macular degeneration, looking through this new edition one cannot help but notice the impact that genetics and cell biology are starting to make on clinical practice.
The Atlas was first published in 1984. It received the Best Medical Textbook of the Year Award that year; Archives of Ophthalmology included it the list of the hundred important ophthalmology books of the 20th century and it has gone on to be translated into seven languages and to earn itself a place as a standard textbook for all those studying for their postgraduate exams.
This new edition has been totally revised by a new generation of international experts. New material and better examples have been added, the text has been completely rewritten and layout reformatted allowing a considerable expansion of material to be made. Advancing technology now allows us to incorporate a CD ROM with all the images and art work with the Atlas which we hope will form the nucleus of a teaching archive for readers. This new edition has been an enormous undertaking made easier by the good nature and forbearance of our publisher, Paul Fam.
